Tale
A family is invited to spend the entire weekend at a lonely house in the countryside, but as the weekend progresses, they realize that there is a dark side to the family that invited them. James McAvoy and Mackenzie Davis share the elements of their characters that they found most intriguing and complement each other as they discuss their different approaches to craft. The story is inspired by the experiences of Christian Tafdrup, director of the original Danish film Speak No Evil (2022), who befriended a Dutch couple in Tuscany with his wife while on vacation. Although the Dutch were a bit socially awkward, the two couples got along very well, and upon returning home, Tafdrup received an invitation from the Dutch family to come to the Netherlands. He thought about it for a while, but decided that it would feel strange being around people he didn’t really know; his story for the film came about when he unleashed his darkest fantasies of what could have happened if he had agreed (while maintaining that the original Dutch couple never gave off bad vibes).

Licensed by Warner Music UK Ltd. No pun intended – if you’ve seen the European original (which is not even 2 years old) you might understand what I’m trying to say. To watch this, it’s probably worth not seeing it – one might think! However, when watching this movie (and it seems to mostly stick to the plan), it seems like this movie is trying to “improve”; things that some people didn’t like about the original…the son is one of those things…illness can be hard to handle…your situation can make you lose your passion…or it can make you lose it. Not here – and that elevates the movie.
His performance is both subtle and great
Same goes for James McAvoy…he really is the heart of the movie. I don’t remember every little aspect of the original and I don’t want to offend the original players…so let’s just say he’s amazing in this. The acting and overall writing work great, with some added twists…even if the tweaks may not seem all that significant at first…but in the end (literally) we get something different…for better or worse! I like it – 1) because it’s different from the original and 2) because it fits the movie and the characters it has to offer more! I was skeptical, but this is just as good as the original… for different reasons!
